Brigitte Bierlein, the former head of Austria’s Constitutional Court and the country’s first female chancellor in an interim government in 2019, has sadly passed away at the age of 74. Her death was announced by Chancellor Karl Nehammer, who praised her as a shining example of self-determination, equal rights, and breaking through glass ceilings.

Bierlein, a distinguished legal expert, served on Austria's Constitutional Court as vice-president and then as president before her appointment as chancellor in June 2019. She took on the role of interim leader following a confidence vote that led to the collapse of the governing coalition between the right-wing People’s Party and the far-right Freedom Party.

During her tenure as chancellor, Bierlein emphasized the importance of youth engagement in building a strong, livable, and tolerant Austria. She led the country with a cabinet of civil servants, often referred to as a government of experts.

Aside from her professional duties, Bierlein was actively involved in public service, including work with the public prosecutor’s office and a victim protection commission against abuse and violence. She was also known for her passion for theater and the arts.

Bierlein, a Viennese native, did not have children and often spoke about her decision not to combine a career with motherhood. Her partner, judge Ernest Maurer, passed away in 2021.

Chancellor Nehammer expressed gratitude for Bierlein's dedication and love for Austria, highlighting her willingness to take on responsibility during challenging times. He emphasized the debt of gratitude the country owes to her for her service.
