Australian shares have traded flat after an early rally faded as multiple states paused for a public holiday and traders tracked sovereign debt concerns in Europe.

The S&P/ASX200 ended Monday 4.3 points higher, up 0.05 per cent to 8686.4, as the broader All Ordinaries gained 4.5 points, or 0.05 per cent, to 8859.2.
