Australia opt to bat first in T20 World Cup semi

Alyssa Healy and Jess Jonassen have returned to the Australian side for the T20 World Cup semi-final against India in Cape Town as captain Meg Lanning opted to bat first.

Pace-bowling allrounder Annabel Sutherland and legspinner Alana King have been left out of Thursday's team at Newlands.

Jonassen was dropped from the XI after scoring a duck and returning figures of 1-0-11-0 in Australia's tournament opener against New Zealand.

During the defending champions' training sessions ahead of the semi-final, the 30-year-old left-arm spinner was seen bowling extensively at the nets, most times under the watch of assistant coach Dan Marsh.

King's omission marks her missing out on the starting XI for the first time in this edition of the tournament and follows her wicketless run across the four-match group stages.

Lanning anchored her decision to set a target on the conditions being "really good" at Newlands and the pitch being conducive to batting.

With a steady wind blowing, the pace attack of both teams could dictate terms in what is a rematch of the 2020 T20 World Cup final.

India have made three changes.

Sneh Rana, who was added to the main squad on the morning of the match, alongside Yastika Bhatia and Radha Yadav have come in for Pooja Vatsrakar, Devika Vaidya and Rajeshwari Gayakwad, respectively.

Spin-bowling allrounder Rana, capped 47 times in international cricket, was approved by the ICC Event Technical Committee as a replacement player in India's 15-member primary squad after Vastrakar was ruled out of the tournament due to an upper respiratory tract infection.

India captain Harmanpreet Kaur had fever in the lead-up to the semi-final but she said at the toss she was feeling fine.

Australia lead India 3-2 in their T20 World Cup encounters.

India are the only team to have beaten Australia across limited-overs cricket since March 2021.
