What we learned, 6 July 2025
With that we’re wrapping up the blog. Before we go, here are the major stories from Sunday:
Victoria police arrested a 34-year-old man after a suspicious fire at a synagogue in East Melbourne on Friday night.
Home affairs minister Tony Burke described the incident as “an attack on Australia”. Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu called it “reprehensible” and demanded Anthony Albanese “take all action” to end hate crimes, as Daisy Dumas reported.
Peter Russell-Clarke, host of 1980s cooking show Come and Get It, has died aged 89.
A woman, who was bitten by an animal at Queensland’s Darling Downs Zoo, was airlifted to hospital with “a significant arm injury” and was now in a stable condition, as Andrew Messenger reported.
Shadow minister for communication and women, Melissa McIntosh, told the ABC Insiders program the government had taken too long to act on childcare centre issues.
The Bureau of Meteorology’s Angus Hines said a powerful cold front with damaging winds and heavy rainfall was expected to reach Perth and south-western WA this afternoon, and would arrive “with a bang”.
We’ll pick things up again tomorrow.
Qld zoo says woman bitten by animal was watching keepers working in carnivore precinct
Darling Downs Zoo in Queensland has posted a statement on social media, after a woman was bitten by an animal at the zoo and airlifted to hospital this morning.
At approximately 8.30 this morning a much-loved member of our family was watching keepers working in the carnivore precinct.
This is something that she has done many, many times over the past 20 years. She is well versed in safety protocols around potentially dangerous animals.
Inexplicably, at this stage, one animal grabbed her by one arm and caused severe damage to it. At no stage did this animal leave it’s enclosure and there was no risk at all to staff members or members of the public.
