An ambitious plan to construct a massive solar farm in remote northern Australia has taken a significant step forward after receiving environmental approvals from the Australian government. The $19 billion project, spearheaded by Australian company Sun Cable, involves the development of a 12,400-hectare solar farm that will transmit electricity to Singapore via a submarine cable.
The Australia-Asia PowerLink project aims to deliver up to six gigawatts of green electricity annually, positioning Australia as a renewable energy superpower and boosting its economy. The project, which includes an 800-kilometer overhead transmission line to Darwin and a 4,300-kilometer submarine cable to Singapore, is set to be the largest solar precinct globally.
The initiative was initially supported by prominent figures such as a mining magnate and a tech entrepreneur, with plans unveiled during a state visit by the Singaporean and Australian Prime Ministers in 2022. Despite facing challenges in early 2023 due to a funding dispute, the project regained momentum following a consortium takeover later that year.
Sun Cable Australia’s managing director expressed satisfaction at overcoming a major regulatory hurdle and outlined plans to progress towards a Final Investment Decision by 2027. The company anticipates commencing electricity supply in the early 2030s, marking a significant milestone in Australia's energy landscape.
