Ethan Ewing has survived a tense elimination round battle at the Tahiti Pro to keep alive his hopes of winning a maiden world surfing title.

The Queenslander moved back up into the World Surf League's Finals-bound top five on the back of his tight win over Hawaiian Seth Moniz on day one of competition.
