An aunt has fallen out with her husband's family after she told her sister-in-law that her children would grow up hating their 'ridiculous' names.
The 27-year-old had been asked what her opinion was on her next niece or nephew being named Astra, Inky, or Lore. She described her 34-year-old sister-in-law as the definition of a 'crunchie' mum, a term used describe 'neo-hippy' parents.
Turning to Reddit to ask readers if she was in the wrong for being so blunt, the aunt said her sister-in-law's family is "vegan, with no electronics in the house, has all-natural toys and clothes for the kids, homeschooling, etc" and "wanted her kids to have unique names and not basic names".
Writing under the username Unlikely_Repair_8941, the aunt said: "All her kids have ridiculous names. Baryleen [a girl aged 4] pronounced Bryalin, Falkin [a boy aged three] pronounced falcon, Rorai [girl, three] pronounced Rorie and Kelvin [a one-year-old boy]) pronounced Calvin.
"My SIL [sister-in-law] asked me what my opinion was on her naming her next baby Astra, Inky, or Lore. She also went on a rant about how my husband and I's baby is going to have a basic name and not be memorable (I'm 6 months pregnant and my husband and I plan to name our son James)
"I told her she was naming kids not dogs and her kids are going to hate their names once they get older. She got really mad and began screaming at me that I was rude and kids' names are more than just a name. She stormed out of my house after this.
"All day I've been getting calls from my MIL [mother-in-law] and BIL [brother-in-law] about how I'm being evil and rude and need to apologise to her. My Husband agrees with me that someone needed to tell her she's giving these kids ridiculous names.
"I feel bad like maybe I should apologise. It wasn't really my place to say anything, but I'm so sick of her mom-shaming me."
However Redditors have largely sided with the aunt. In a response that has been upvoted more than 5,000 times, RayofSunshine_27 said: "She asked your opinion, you delivered."
Sithmom_78 agreed, writing: "Yep. If she didn’t want your opinion on her name and should not have asked nor criticized OP [original poster's] baby name."
Accomplished_Two1611 said: "I was ok till I heard the plans for little Inky. Sounds like a name for a cat." And Whitewer said: "People never seem to think what their kids will go through with the outrageous names they pick."
