Myanmar's former leader Aung San Suu Kyi, who has been incarcerated, has been relocated from prison to house arrest as a precautionary health measure attributed to a heatwave, as stated by the military government. The decision to move Suu Kyi, aged 78, and Win Myint, the 72-year-old former president, along with other elderly and infirm prisoners, was made due to the extreme heat conditions. This move has not yet been officially announced within Myanmar.
Aung San Suu Kyi has been serving a lengthy 27-year prison sentence in Naypyitaw, the country's capital, on various criminal charges that her supporters and human rights organizations claim were politically motivated and unjust. Win Myint, on the other hand, was serving an eight-year prison term in Taungoo, located in Myanmar's Bago region.
The unrest in Myanmar escalated following the military's seizure of power in 2021, which led to the ousting of the democratically elected government, the detention of Aung San Suu Kyi, and the crackdown on peaceful demonstrations advocating for a return to democratic governance.
