Athletic Club Players Under Police Inquiry For Street Celebration

Athletic Club

Police in Bilbao have opened an inquiry into four Athletic Club players following an impromptu street party held by the squad to celebrate their recent Copa del Rey win. The celebration took place after Athletic secured their first major trophy in 40 years by winning the Copa in Seville on Saturday, defeating Mallorca in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw in extra time.

The official celebrations for the victory are scheduled to occur on Thursday, with the traditional barge 'La Gabarra' set to carry the team and the trophy along the river Nervion in Bilbao, accompanied by a flotilla of smaller boats. However, on Tuesday, the players organized an unplanned celebration on the streets, complete with music from an amateur band led by forward Asier Villalibre, who showcased his trumpet skills.

Videos circulating on social media captured several players, including captain Iker Muniain and forward Iñaki Williams, reveling in the festivities. Muniain addressed the crowd, expressing gratitude for the support and acknowledging the significance of the long-awaited victory. The spontaneous celebration drew hundreds of fans to join in the jubilation.

Athletic Club shared a video on its social media platforms, showcasing Muniain's speech and the players' interactions with the enthusiastic crowd. Williams also shared his excitement about the impromptu celebration, describing it as one of the best days of his life.

Reports indicate that the Basque police, Ertzaintza, initiated an inquiry into the incident due to the public gathering taking place without prior notification to the authorities. Such actions could lead to an administrative penalty, potentially a fine, for violating public safety regulations. The identities of the four players under investigation have not been disclosed at this time.
