At least 20 rural Alabama hospitals will receive emergency labor and delivery carts, simulation equipment, and staff training under a new round of federal rural health grants announced on October 1. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services said the round totals nearly $55 million across 34 grants through the Rural Health Transformation Program.
The labor and delivery piece is far smaller than the headline number. According to Gov. Kay Ivey's office, the University of Alabama at Birmingham will receive $1 million for the statewide project. Neither CMS nor the state named the hospitals or said when the equipment and training will arrive.
