Aston Villa transfer news: Sven Botman and £25m man 'among three defensive targets'

Aston Villa are very active in the summer transfer window with Steven Gerrard on course to complete his third signing after agreeing a £26million fee with Sevilla for defender Diego Carlos.

The 29-year-old Brazil international is due to arrive in the UK to undergo a medical and finalise personal terms after three years with Sevilla where he won the Europa League in 2020. Carlos, a target for Newcastle during the January window, will be Villa's second signing since the end of the Premier League season, following free transfer of Marseille midfielder Boubacar Kamara after a £17m deal to sign Philippe Coutinho from Barcelona was agreed earlier in the month.

Now Villa fans are excitedly speculating who could be next in the door with the club being linked with plenty of fresh moves.

Villa tipped to buy another defender

Carlos' imminent arrival has thrown Tyrone Mings' future into doubt after the Villa captain was dropped by then boss Dean Smith earlier this season and has since struggled for consistent form under Gerrard as he has lost his place in the England squad.

And the Brazilian may not be the last defender through the door at Villa Park this summer as Villa have also discussed Everton and Fulham target James Tarkowski plus Lille's Sven Botman who is wanted by Newcastle and AC Milan, among others according the Daily Mail.

Rangers set price for Bassey

Gerrard has been tipped for several days now with a move for Rangers defender Calvin Bassey,22, who has impressed this term.

Now Sky Sports are reporting Villa have been told it will take an offer of more than £25m to Rangers for Bassey which would represent a new transfer record in Scottish football and eclipse the current record received by a Scottish club when Kieran Tierney left Celtic for Arsenal.

Gerrard is a big admirer of the Nigerian international, having lured him to Glasgow him from Leicester City for around £230,000 two years ago. Villa are reportedly trying to pursue a deal quickly to stave off competition from elsewhere.

Stars tipped for exit amid shake-up

The Express and Star in the Midlands reckon Villa boss Gerrard still wants to add a left-back and potentially a striker but will also look to move some fringe players out. Douglas Luiz, who has just one year remaining on his contract, is a target for Roma while the outlet say offers will be considered for Morgan Sanson, Anwar El Ghazi and Trezeguet among others.

The trio have barely featured under Gerrard with El Ghazi loaned to Everton, Egyptian wideman Trezeguet loaned to Turkish club Basaksehir while French midfielder Sanson has failed to grab his chance to shine at Villa.
