Aston Villa 4-1 West Ham: Douglas Luiz and Ollie Watkins on target again to extend long winning run

Aston Villa continued their remarkable home record as they eased to a 4-1 win over West Ham.

Unai Emery's side went into the match on a run of 10 straight Premier League wins at Villa Park, a set of results stretching back to February, and a brace from Douglas Luiz set them firmly on their way to extending that to 11 victories.

Jarrod Bowen's deflected strike gave the visitors hope of mounting a comeback, but Ollie Watkins maintained his superb form to put the result beyond doubt and Leon Bailey netted late on to send the visitors fifth in the table, just two points off the top.

Villa were on top for much of the first-half and eventually got the lead they deserved, as Luiz's strike from the edge of the area proved too powerful for Alphonse Areola, having taken a slight flick off a defender.

There was nothing the goalkeeper could do after the break, as the hosts were awarded a penalty for a foul on Ezri Konsa by Edson Alvarez. Luiz strolled up to the ball before lifting it down the middle as Areola dived out of the way.

West Ham needed just four minutes to respond though, even if it did come in relatively fortuitous circumstances. Bowen tried his luck from distance, with the shot taking a huge deflection off Pau Torres and spinning into the far corner to halve the deficit.

It was the Hammers who then looked more likely to score again, Villa Park starting to feel somewhat nervy, but the hosts soon took back control as their flying goalscoring form continued.

John McGinn clipped a pass through to Watkins, who drove into the box and hammered a wonderful strike past Areola at the near post, before Bailey extended the lead further in the closing stages, showing lovely footwork in the box and providing a finish to match as Villa enjoyed a late flourish.
