Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced brings a huge change to combat and I kind of love it

Ubisoft is telling you to cut out the OP strategies when it comes to combat in Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced.

Over on the Ubisoft website, Paul Fu, creative director of Black Flag Resynced (and developer on the original release) details some of the changes to the remake's combat system. "At its core, Resynced is an action-adventure game, and combat is designed to be systematic and deliberate; every move is designed to have an advantage, a disadvantage, and a specific role to play," Fu explains.

While the rest of the combat now includes changes like a new heavy attack and dodge attack, it's actually the enemies that are going to get the biggest upgrade when it comes to combat. Ubisoft notes that enemies can now react to repetitive behavior and will punish you accordingly for spamming the same strategy in combat.

Fu details, "For example, wait around too much for a Parry, and enemies will react by performing Unstoppable Attacks that cannot be parried. Abuse a Kick too much, and enemies will quickly dodge them." Of course, you can play around with this, with the director explaining that "the trick is to alternate between offense and defense. Varying your combos helps. Rotate between Kicks, Sweeps, Rope Darts, Pistols and Heavy Strikes at the end of your attack combos to confuse enemies."

Of course, Assassin's Creed isn't exactly Devil May Cry, nor is it trying to be a game that focuses on combat mechanics. But given that the combat in Black Flag is somewhat dated after countless more entries in the series, it is a nice surprise that Ubisoft is going back to clean up some of the combat and turn the typically-mindless encounters into something that should hopefully be a bit more challenging.

Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced lead confirms "social stealth is back," but hidden blade combat isn't.
