Assam: Cop injured during eviction protest in Karbi Anglong

GUWAHATI: A police officer was injured after locals protesting against eviction allegedly hurled stones at the district administration officials and security personnel at Bokajan in Karbi Anglong bordering Nagaland on Sunday.

Officer-in-charge of Khatkhati police station Rajua Duwara sustained injuries on his head and face.

Bokajan sub-divisional police officer John Das said, “The district administration had served eviction notice to 100 families living illegally on government land claimed by the revenue department. As soon as the team arrived in the Balijan Khanbasti area for clearing encroachments, the residents staged a protest holding placards and shouting slogans. Later, they started pelting stones at the police personnel and district administration officials.”

He said the injured officer was rushed to a nearby hospital for medical assistance.

However, the constructions were dismantled by the administration and revenue land cleared of encroachment by evening after the situation was brought under control.

In December last year, an eviction drive was carried out in an adjacent area where 115 houses were dismantled. According to the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council land and revenue department date, a total of 210 bighas of government land in the region are under encroachment. CM Himanta Biswa Sarma had announced the state government’s commitment to clear the encroached areas after taking charge.
