Asheville Regional Airport has resumed commercial flights into and out of Western North Carolina following disruptions caused by the impacts of Helene. The airport spokesperson, Tina Kinsey, confirmed on Tuesday morning that the airport has been open and operational since Saturday. However, various challenges such as road closures, gas shortages affecting staff commutes, internet and cell connectivity issues, and high winds initially delayed the resumption of airline operations.
Situated approximately 9 miles south of downtown Asheville in Fletcher, the airport is now facilitating flights by Allegiant, American Airlines, Delta, and United Airlines. Despite the resumption of services, there is still a possibility of flight cancellations.
In addition to its regular operations, Asheville Regional Airport has been playing a crucial role in aiding the local community. The airport has been utilized as a drop-off point for emergency relief supplies to support the areas severely impacted by the recent events. Notably, the North Carolina Air National Guard conducted a significant operation on Monday, transporting over 100,000 pounds of relief materials from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) using a C-17 cargo aircraft.
