Harry Brook might have taken the crown as the new hero of Headingley after his 75 steered England towards a thrilling victory against Australia, but there were more twists to come before the home side kept the Ashes series alive.
Cricket matches in Leeds have a tendency to go down to the wire, and this was no exception. The hosts looked to be closing in on a memorable victory when Brook was caught out off Mitchell Starc for 75, and England still needing 21 to win.
Mark Wood and Chris Woakes then carried England over the line - with Wood hitting 16 runs from eight balls to spark dramatic scenes of celebration.
Having started the day on 27-0, needing another 224 to win, it looked as though the momentum was with Ben Stokes’ side. From 42 without loss, England had slid to 173 for six, and crucially, Stokes, who orchestrated the miracle four years ago, was out.
When Stokes went for 13, a lot of the country’s hopes went with him, but Brook’s stunning innings got England within touching distance before Wood and Woakes dragged the side back into contention in the Ashes series.
