AIZAWL: The death of 81 more pigs from African swine fever (ASF) on Wednesday has taken the toll to 2,572 since the outbreak of the disease in Mizorman in March, animal husbandry and veterinary department officials said.
At least 39 villages in six of the state's 11 districts have been identified as ASF-infested. The Mizoram-Myanmar border districts of Champhai and Aizawl are among the worst-hit places. The officials said 2,029 pigs have been culled so far with Farkawn village in Champhai seeing the culling of 700 pigs alone.
There were reports of 442 pigs having died at Farkawn village, followed by 390 at Darlawn and 296 at Sakawrdai village in Aizawl district. The officials said altogether 256 pigs are suspected to have been claimed by the porcine disease in five districts though laboratory tests are yet to confirm the same.
