Asda staff will be given a paid day off for the King Charles III Coronation - but only if they want to volunteer.
The big four supermarket has announced that its hourly paid staff who are scheduled to work on Monday, May 8 can request a paid day off to participate in the Big Help Out.
The Big Help Out campaign is a national day of volunteering to mark the Coronation, with over 1,500 charities supporting the scheme.
Any Asda staff who want to volunteer can request to book the day off and it will not affect their normal holiday entitlement.
Staff who are working the Bank Holiday after the King's Coronation will receive double pay for their shift.
Asda will be advertising details of Big Help Out events as well as other local volunteering opportunities on community boards across its over 600 stores in the UK.
Staff can also find local volunteering opportunities through the Big Help Out app which can be downloaded from the App store and Google Play.
Staff who choose to volunteer will have to complete a form detailing where they will be volunteering and the hours spent in order to have the extra holiday day.
Alongside this, the supermarket will bring together over 380 Asda Community Champions across the UK to "make a difference to their area" by arranging litter picks in places such as parks, community centres, beaches and canals across the Bank Holiday weekend.
Furthermore, Asda will surprise 10 Coronation-inspired community projects across the UK with funding for events taking place over the Coronation Bank Holiday weekend and those that are ongoing.
Volunteering groups can apply for funding through the Asda Foundation and those who are to receive the money will be contacted over the next few weeks.
Hayley Tatum, Asda's chief people and corporate affairs officer, Hayley said the supermarket was "proud" to be supporting the Big Help Out campaign.
She said: "We understand that this is an incredibly important event for many of our colleagues, and they want to get involved, which is why we’re offering them the opportunity to take a day off to support their local area, without needing to use their holiday entitlement.
“We are also saying thank you to those colleagues who do choose to work on Monday, May 8 by offering them a double time payment as a thank you for their continued efforts to serve our customers over the Bank Holiday weekend.”
