Asda has launched a frozen Christmas dinner that can feed a family of five for £22 - which works out at £4.40 per head.
It comes as rival supermarket Tesco introduced their bargain Christmas meal, complete with a 1.5kg turkey crown, roast potatoes and all the trimmings - for £25 (around £4.80 per person).
The frozen dinner deal places Asda ahead of Tesco in the race to offer the best value this Christmas.
Asda says their frozen dinner bundle is currently the cheapest on the market, at more than 40p cheaper per head than Tesco.
For Asda Rewards App users, a further £1.50 can be saved if they spend £20 on selected frozen Christmas dinner essentials.
Richard Lim, CEO of Retail Economics says: “The grocers are working tirelessly to convey value in the communication they have with their core customers.
“This is an intelligent position of a proposition that strikes at the heart of the festive season and what’s important to consumers.”
“The retailer where people decide to do their main shop for Christmas dinner comes attached with lots of other supplementary purchases that go around that, so this offer is a really important tactic to secure market share.”
Those who decide to purchase Asda's bundle this Christmas can enjoy the following items:
- Asda Basted Small British Turkey, Frozen (approx. 2.6kg) - £13.50
- Asda Frozen for Freshness Sliced Carrots (1kg) - £1.10
- Asda Frozen for Freshness Garden Peas (1kg) - £1.25
- Asda Party Pigs in Blankets, Frozen (12pk) - £2.50
- Asda Crispy Roast Potatoes, Frozen (800g) - £0.88
- Asda Frozen for Freshness Brussels Sprouts (1kg) - £1.25
- Asda Frozen Yorkshire Puddings, (12pk) - £1.00
Supermarkets offering bundles this Christmas are hoping to push sales but also encourage shoppers to base their whole Christmas shop at that their stores.
Ocado has also joined the race - offering a £30 premium frozen Christmas dinner including big brands like Aunt Bessie’s and Birds Eye.
Their deal includes parsnips, stuffing balls and cauliflower cheese, but no sprouts or carrots. It also includes a stuffed turkey breast joint wrapped in bacon, instead of a whole turkey - which serves four to six people.
Comparing Tesco and Asda’s deals, Asda’s bundle comes in at £2.57 cheaper, despite including a larger Turkey.
Asda offers a whole small turkey, weighing around 2.6kg, while Tesco’s small turkey crown weighs 1.5kg.
Both deals offer similar products - a frozen turkey, pigs in blankets, Yorkshire puddings, plus a kilogram each of peas, carrots and sprouts, and 800g of roast potatoes.
But Tesco’s pack of pigs in blankets includes 20 items compared to Asda’s 12, and Tesco offers 15 Yorkshire puddings compared with Asda’s 12.
