Asda changes its Rewards loyalty app - and it's good news for shoppers

Asda shoppers now have more time to spend their Rewards vouchers after the retailer announced changes to its new loyalty scheme.

Customers now have an extra two months to spend their vouchers after they have created them, extending the deadline from one to three months, benefitting around three million people who use the Asda Rewards app since it launched last year. However, any unused cash in their Cashpots that has not yet been converted into vouchers will still expire six months after the cash was earned.

This means that anyone who began using Asda Rewards last July needs to convert the money they earned in that month to vouchers before the end of January or they will lose them. Customers will receive notifications in the app to remind them of the amount which is due to expire each month.

Asda, the UK's third biggest supermarket, rolled out its loyalty scheme countrywide last summer after piloting it in five North East stores earlier in 2022. Shoppers in the supermarket giant's Benton, Boldon, Byker, Gosforth and South Shields stores were among the first in the country to trial the app-based rewards scheme. The rewards, the supermarket's first loyalty programme in its 72-year- history, is accessed via an app, which you have to download to take part.

Asda Rewards is an app-based loyalty scheme and prides itself on "pounds, not points". Customers see their Cashpot build up in the app as they shop, and they can redeem their cash whenever they choose by creating a voucher in the app with the money they have saved.

Earlier this month, Asda announced it had made changes to its Rewards app amid claims that money saved had disappeared and even been spent far away from customers' homes. Shoppers now need to supply their mobiles to use the loyalty scheme after it tightened its security, although Asda has denied there has been "a widespread security issue" after dozens of customers took to social media to report problems.

Despite teething problems, the Rewards scheme is popular with Asda customers, with around £20million worth of Asda Rewards vouchers spent in store during December.

Mark Baxter, senior director of loyalty at Asda told The Mirror: “We know that many Asda Rewards customers like to save up their Cashpots to spend on special occasions. This change means they now have longer to use their rewards and importantly can build up even larger amounts to use whenever they choose.”
