This week it was announced that Asda will reinstate its discount to Blue Light Card holders, giving money off to those working in the NHS, emergency services, social services, social care sector and Armed Forces.
Card holders will be able to receive 10 per cent off certain products and services, including food and soft drinks, George clothing and homeware, toys, gifts and optical services, in all Asda stores across the UK when they present their Blue Light Card at the checkout. The supermarket has also removed its 12-week qualifying period for staff discount in stores and online until October 2022, so new recruits can save 10 per cent on their shopping from their very first day of employment.
But, while this is good news for Blue Light Card holders, there are still restrictions to what shoppers can use their discount for as some items are not included. For a start, the hefty fuel prices we currently see across the country won't be made any more manageable by a Blue Light discount.

You can get 10 per cent off (most of) your food shop, clothing and homeware in store, but what isn't included? Well, your discount isn't valid in an Asda petrol filling station, Asda On The Move or at Asda Cafes, for a start. This list of items/services might be handy - where you can't use your Blue Light Card discount and on what items:
- George.com
- Asda Online groceries (so you won't get that money off your online shop)

- Tobacco
- Lottery products
- Gift vouchers and cards
- Infant/formula milk
- Cash-back
- Fireworks
- Online games and instant tickets
- Photo printing
- Saver stamps
- Postage stamps
- 'Top-up' mobile phone cards
- Any other financial services and insurances
- Pharmacy and separate concessions
Can it be used for previous purchases, or at the same time as other discounts?
The discount cannot be claimed retrospectively, so it's worth making sure you have it with you whenever you go shopping. It also cannot be used in conjunction with an Asda Colleague Discount Card, or Asda Friends & Family Discount.
It also cannot be used with Asda Reward offers.
Can someone else use my card?
The Blue Light Card member must be present in person for the transaction to claim the discount. It cannot be passed to a friend or family member or any other person.
Blue Light Card holders will also need to provide proof of ID which will be verified at checkout - for example a bank card, driving licence or passport) to validate they are the Blue Light Card holder.
