Sir Keir Starmer is set to visit the White House on Thursday for his first meeting with US president Donald Trump since he was re-elected. It’s will likely be the biggest diplomatic challenge of the prime minister’s tenure so far as Russia’s war in Ukraine tops the agenda.

Trump shocked European leaders by opening discussions with Russian officials to stop the fighting in Ukraine, marking a clear departure from the isolation tactic adopted by his predecessor Joe Biden.
