As Kolkata goes dry, drunk-driving cases dip

KOLKATA: The ban on sale of liquor in large parts of the city from Saturday — due to the Ballygunge bypolls scheduled on Tuesday — has led to a drop in drunk-driving cases across Kolkata. Cops said that while Friday witnessed 74 cases of drunk driving, the figure rose to 80 on Saturday. Yet, by Sunday evening, it fell to 57, with large parts of south Kolkata reporting very few cases. According to police, this was the first time in a month that the total drunk-driving cases fell below 60 on a weekend.

Cops made a comparison of Saturday and Sunday to drive home their point. At the Loudon Street-Park Street crossing on Saturday, a joint naka by traffic cops and local police caught 15 motorists and bikers who were inebriated. At the Park Street-Camac Street crossing the same night, seven others were found driving or riding drunk.
