Artisan bakery and cafe to close for good leaving customers gutted at 'great loss' in Ayrshire town

One of Ayrshire's most popular artisan bakeries is to close for good this weekend.

Gilmartin's Bakery will shut up shop for the final time this Sunday, it was announced this morning.

Run by husband and wife team Steph and James Stewart, the Stewarton cafe owners have called time on their three-and-a-half-year stint at Avenue Square.

The venue serves sourdough, hand-laminated viennoiserie, cakes and bars, all made from scratch in house.

A fully licensed venue, they also hosted pop-ups and events, most recently the popular Reggaelicious food truck took over the eaterie for a special evening.

Steph and James thanked all of their customers for their support and friendship over the past few years.

Gilmartin's posted on Facebook: "Gilmartin's will close its doors for the last time on Sunday, October 30. We would like to thank you all for your support and more importantly your friendship over the past three and a half years - it has meant more to us than you will ever know.

"We hope we leave you with fond memories of great cakes and great chats, a bit of cheer through the bleak pandemic days and a newfound appreciation for sourdough, cinnabuns and pistachio pain au chocolat (all of which I'll make sure we have this weekend!). "Thank you so, so much again. Steph, James and the Gilmartin's Team x"

The announcement sparked an outpouring of emotion from gutted customers.

One customer wrote: "What a shame. A great loss to the town. Good luck for the future."

Another added: "Oh no, this is a very sad post. Whether for take out or sitting in you are without doubt one of our favourite places in the world and you will be sadly missed in the town and by those who travel from further afield to visit.

"This cannot have been an easy decision but wishing you all the very best for the future."
