Arsenal want to host Community Shield this summer with Wembley unavailable

Arsenal and the London Stadium both want to host next season’s Community Shield, with Wembley unavailable as it is being used for the Women’s European Championship Final.

The Football Association (FA) are currently looking at alternative venues and talks are ongoing about who could stage the 2022/23 season curtain-raiser.

The Premier League is due to start on August 6 next season, with the Community Shield pencilled in to take place the weekend before.

That date, however, clashes with the final of this summer’s Women’s Euros, which England are hosting.

It is understood Arsenal and the London Stadium are open to hosting the Community Shield, while other grounds are thought to be in the running too. Villa Park hosted the game back in 2012 when Wembley was being used for the London Olympics.

Tottenham are understood not to be in the running as their stadium is hosting a Lady Gaga concert that weekend.

Arsenal hosting the Community Shield could impact the format of this season’s Emirates Cup, which is still being finalised.

The pre-season tournament is due to return this summer and is provisionally scheduled for the final weekend of July, when the Community Shield takes place.

In the past the Emirates Cup has taken place over two days, but more recently it has been condensed to one, when both the Arsenal men and women’s teams play.

That would be the case again this year if Arsenal are chosen to host the Community Shield.
