Arsenal are celebrating a statement win over Bayern Munich in the Champions League. The Gunners came out on top on Wednesday night in a blockbuster battle between arguably the two best teams in Europe so far this season, with Mikel Arteta’s substitutions working a treat as Noni Madueke and Gabriel Martinelli both scored after the break alongside an impactful cameo from Riccardo Calafiori.
The two sides were level at half-time after a fascinating opening. The in-form Jurrien Timber expertly flicked home Bukayo Saka’s excellent corner to give Arsenal an early lead at a bouncing Emirates Stadium, only for Eberechi Eze to waste a glorious chance before Bayern hit back out of nowhere through 17-year-old sensation Lennart Karl, who was teed up wonderfully by Joshua Kimmich and ex-Arsenal forward Serge Gnabry.
Arsenal’s injury woes continued before the interval, losing Leandro Trossard to an apparent calf issue as Madueke was summoned from the bench, while Harry Kane was largely anonymous as Bayern suffered their first loss this season in any competition to lose ground to their opponents at the top of the league phase table.
