Arsenal told to abandon £122m transfer mission so Edu can secure Mikel Arteta's dream signing

With less than two weeks of the January transfer window to go and after much deliberation, Edu is quickly running out of time to solve Mikel Arteta's striker crisis.

Arsenal have courted interest in several of Europe's leading number nines but have been yet to pop the question, get down on one knee and put a ring on - Edu obviously doesn't listen to much Beyonce...

But, keen to do so, the Gunners have now submitted an opening offer for Dusan Vlahovic, according to Italian outlet Corriere Della Sera.

The report claims that the north Londoners' technical director has tabled an offer of £50million plus Uruguayan midfielder Lucas Torreira, who is currently on loan at Fiorentina.

Tom Canton spoke to football scouting and analysis expert David Hughes live on The Arsenal Way 'Analysing Arsenal' show to delve into what Fiorentina's 21-year-old talisman would bring to the Emirates.

Hughes kickstarted proceedings by detailing how the Serbian's profile differs from either Aubameyang and Lacazette, arming Arteta with a new dimension to his side's attack.

"The beauty of Vlahovic is that he's got the whole package," he said. "You look at him initially and you think, 'he's an imposing figure, he's six foot three, well built,' so you think you're looking at a target man here.

"You know, a threat in the air, good at holding up the ball - yeah, he is good at those things but he's also a really good technical player."

Hughes then explained how Vlahovic's ability to score a wide range of different goals makes him a signing that won't restrict Arteta to a play style, like Aubameyang or Lacazette may have done in the past.

"If you look at his goals, the assumption would be that there would be a lot of headed goals and there's definitely one or two - you're looking at a player who can score a variety of goals," he said.

"That's really interesting from an Arsenal point of view because you can play a few different ways with him. He can link really well with Arsenal's midfield and key attackers but he obviously has that clinical edge to his game which is exactly what the team needs."

Canton added by noting how Arsenal have been monitoring a range of strikers - an eye-watering £121.5 million worth, as per Transfermarkt, to be exact - but Vlahovic's all round profile makes him the most attractive prospect on the list.

"Aubameyang has missed a ridiculous amount of high profile chances over the last 12 to 18 months and Arsenal have been linked to plenty of clinical strikers, Jonathan David, Alexander Isak and Dominic Calvert-Lewin," he said.

"But, it is those additional traits in Vlahovic's game that make him standout."
