Former Premier League manager Alan Pardew has controversially suggested that Arsenal’s potential Premier League title should be marked with an asterisk if they manage to fend off Manchester City, citing concerns over their perceived time-wasting tactics.
His comments follow a contentious 1-0 victory over Brighton, which saw the Gunners extend their lead at the top of the table.
Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler was highly critical of Arsenal’s approach during Wednesday’s match at the Amex Stadium.
Goalkeeper David Raya notably went down injured three times, requiring on-pitch treatment, leading Hurzeler to accuse Arsenal of "making their own rules".
This assessment found agreement with former West Ham and Newcastle boss Pardew.
Speaking to talkSPORT, he remarked: "When I’m looking at them with my football manager’s head on, they’re so professional. They do every bit of gamesmanship to get it over the line."
Pardew elaborated on his asterisk claim, stating: "There’ll be an asterisk next to their name because you’ve only got to look at them really in these type of performances and say it’s just a functional display. It’s a professional, functional display.
“They’re good, they’re strong, they’re powerful. But there is nothing beautiful about them. That’s the truth."
Mikel Arteta’s side delivered a surprisingly subdued attacking performance, managing only seven shots on goal – including Bukayo Saka’s ninth-minute winner – and completing just 70.9 per cent of their passes.
However, they compensated with a resolute defensive display that stifled Brighton’s fluency.
A disgruntled Hurzeler later questioned the tactics, stating: "I will never be the kind of manager who tries to win in that way."
He added: "If I ask everyone in the room, did he really enjoy this game? I’m sure maybe one raises his arm because he’s a big Arsenal fan. Where will this go in the future? Is this what the supporters are paying for?"
