Arsenal set for January transfer windfall as World Cup earnings revealed after last-16 outcome

Arsenal are preparing for their first game of the mid-season break as the World Cup continues. With the January window fast approaching and the club recording yet another loss, the focus turns to how much the club could spend this winter.

Although there is an expectation that funds may not be as sizeable as in the summer, Arsenal have benefitted financially to some degree from their players' participation. FIFA pay roughly £8,500 per player, per day that they’re away.

Arsenal had ten players take part in Qatar but as the tournament reaches the quarter-finals many have dropped out through elimination, injury or other reasons. After the group stages, using the above figure as a guide, Arsenal had earned at least £1,589,500.

Ben White’s departure from the England camp due to personal reasons could potentially have ended the income for his participation in the tournament as it is expected he will not return. Thomas Partey’s Ghana were eliminated on matchday three and therefore his benefits ended at the end of the group stage.

Matt Turner’s United States were knocked out by the Netherlands in the first round of last-16 matches. Meaning that his sole day in the knockouts earned the club another £8,500.

Takehiro Tomiyasu’s Japan were beaten on penalties two days later by Croatia earning Arsenal a further £25,500. Gabriel Jesus, however, was injured after the group stage and according to reports flew home for surgery on December 4, meaning additional payments after the group stage totalled at least £17,000.

Granit Xhaka and Switzerland were beaten in the final round of last-16 clashes by Portugal. The former Arsenal captain has confirmed he will fly straight to Dubai to meet up with the team but his extended stay in Qatar earned another £34,000 was added.

William Saliba, Bukayo Saka, Aaron Ramsdale and Gabriel Martinelli made it through to the quarterfinals with France, England and Brazil adding another £204,000 up until Wednesday. Meaning the current total earned by Arsenal from its players at the World Cup stands at roughly £1,878,500.

Hypothetically, if England were to meet Brazil in the final, beating Saliba’s France along the way, Arsenal could see this figure rise to roughly £2,133,500. In the grand scheme of a transfer window, this seems a small amount and relative to the fees paid for some of the Gunners’ best talent it is.

However, Gabriel Martinelli cost a figure which started at just over double this. So, certainly it could still help in some way toward some investment this winter.
