Arsenal have strived to improve their selling reputation after several years of poor deals seeing a minimal financial benefit to the club. Sporting director Edu has felt the need to cancel contracts and come to agreements in terminating deals.
The Brazilian told football.london that these were seen as ‘investments’. However it could not carry on for Arsenal and despite some player sales remaining low, the club have aimed to improve the potential gains in the market with the inclusion of sell-on clauses.
Matteo Guendouzi and Konstantinos Mavropanos both left the club permanently last summer after Marseille and Stuttgart, respectively, had the 'buy clauses' activated in their respective loan deals. The Mirror reports that Guendouzi is thought to have had a 15% sell-on clause included in the switch and in addition football.london understands that Mavropanos’ switch also includes a sell-on clause at around 10%.

Although the fees involved in their sales were low due to the poor selling reputation of the club and the positions of both players in the squad, Arsenal worked to include these potential future benefits. Arsenal are now in a different place and would hope to start making a profit on players should they move on thanks to smarter and savvier buys.
However, they could potentially be about to earn more through a bizarre sell-on clause in a player who left in the summer. Hector Bellerin left the club after terminating his contract with Arsenal and joining Barcelona.
Barca were the club Arsenal acquired the Spaniard from in 2011 after spending eight years at their La Masia academy. He has, however, only made seven appearances totalling 494 minutes of action this season.
According to The Athletic, Sporting Lisbon are interested in replacing Pedro Porro, who is expected to join Tottenham, with Bellerin. The former Arsenal man is said to be keen on the move and has just six months left on his deal with the Blaugrana.
Anything that Sporting pay the Catalonian club will see 25% go to Arsenal, football.london understands. Clubs tend to raise the price of players who could leave to make up for what would be lost in these clauses.
Arsenal will be hoping Barcelona push for a lucrative deal for Bellerin so they can get as much as possible. It could be a surprise gain for the Gunners they were not expecting.
