Arsenal return to Arsene Wenger transfer target after decade in £22m Gabriel Jesus plan

Arsenal are plotting a move for Torino star Antonio Sanabria this summer - a decade since Arsene Wenger tried to sign him while he was in the Barcelona academy.

The Gunners could be on the lookout for a new striker, given Gabriel Jesus' lack of form this term. The Brazilian's all-round game has impressed the Arsenal faithful, but he has struck just 10 goals in 32 games across all competitions.

As for Eddie Nketiah, he has scored four Premier League goals this season and might be heading for the exit door despite signing a new contract at the end of last season. Leandro Trossard can also play down the middle, but arguably his best role is from the left-hand side.

Now, according to Italian outlet La Repubblica, Arsenal are eyeing up a switch for Sanabria after scoring 12 times in 31 appearances for Torino this season. The Paraguayan forward has two years left on his contract and is reportedly available for around £21.5million at the end of the campaign.

This isn't the first time Arsenal have tried to sign Sanabria, however. He was previously of interest to Wenger as far back as 2013 when he was in the famous La Masia academy, where he played in the same age group as Wolves winger Adama Traore. The Gunners also went back in for Sanabria two years later before his move to Roma.

But Arsenal may face competition from AC Milan and Napoli, who are both thought to be keen on the striker. Sanabria is about to hit his prime after recently turning 27 and Mikel Arteta feels he can boost their forward line and strengthen their options at the top end of the pitch.

After his move to Roma, Sanabria impressed on loan at Sporting Gijon, before making the switch to Real Betis. He enjoyed four years at the Seville club, scoring 23 goals in 84 appearances. Having then spent a year and a half on loan at Genoa, Sanabria was back in Italy when he joined Torino on a permanent deal.

When asked about his summer transfer plans earlier this month, Arteta said: "We are really lucky because when you open the doors of Arsenal and you talk about Arsenal to any player, they want to come. My experience has been that, regardless of Champions League [football].

"Champions League helps because every player wants to be involved in that competition and it’s going to help us because we are going to have to nail the recruitment because we know that we are going to have to play a different level and the demands are going to be even higher."

Arsenal are also set to dip into the market for a new midfielder this summer. Declan Rice is the name that is being mentioned ahead of a potential move from West Ham, while Mason Mount is also being linked. Thomas Partey and Granit Xhaka both could be sold, meanwhile.
