Arsenal pave the way for Bernd Leno transfer exit with 'strong' replacement bid

Arsenal are looking to sign goalkeeper Matt Turner from New England Revolution and have tabled a strong bid, according to reports.

The Gunners are looking to sign the USA international before this month's transfer window slams shut.

Turner has played in the MLS since 2016 and has 13 caps for his country, starting in all six games played at the 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup.

ESPN understand that a bid has been made, which could spell the end for Bernd Leno at the Emirates.

Mikel Arteta made Aaron Ramsdale one of his summer signings and the Englishman has established himself as the club's No 1.

Leno formerly held that title but has spent much of the season watching on from the bench.

Arteta will have bee reluctant to let the German go without bringing in cover so a swoop for Turner could have a knock on effect.

Leno was signed by Unai Emery back in 2018 but will be keen to play regularly.

A move back to the Bundesliga has been touted for the shotstopper, who took issue with the way in which he was dropped.

"There was no clear reason why I was out, but it had nothing to do with my performance," Leno told Sport Bild when he was axed from the starting XI.

"He is the trainer, he decides. Of course, it's difficult for me.

"Only if nothing changes in my situation by winter would I have to think about things: what option do I have, how can I continue? I’m concentrating on my work in training; I can't commit to anything else at the moment."

The Gunners boss has refused to get drawn into a media exchange with his goalkeeper at the time but maintained talks were held before Ramsdale came in as a starter.

"I had a very clear conversation with him (Leno) 48 hours before I was going to make the decision," Arteta said.

"Obviously any conversation I have with him is completely private and I'm not going to speak with any media about it."

Arsenal's January business could also see them bring in new faces with Fiorentina's Dusan Vlahovic on their radar.

The future of Arteta's forward options remain unclear which has led to their interest in the prolific Serbian.

The Spaniard has said: “The team are working extremely hard to get the players that we want and we have no news to give you.

“We have a plan to try to bring players in and try to get the players we want with the right qualities and improve the squad in the best possible way every single window.”
