Arsenal news: Mikel Arteta's verdict on the Champions League and title chances

Arsenal can move back to the top of the Premier League with a win over Chelsea on Tuesday night.

The Gunners have stuttered of late, failing to win any of their last four matches and were leapfrogged by Manchester City at the summit on the weekend. Pep Guardiola's side beat Fulham 2-1 to move a point clear of Arsenal in the race for the title and City still also have a game in hand.

However, Arteta hasn't given up on the title just yet and hopes the Gunners can bounce back in style when they return to the Emirates Stadium for the first time since that dramatic 3-3 draw against Southampton. The Gunners suffered a 4-1 defeat at City in their most recent game last Wednesday.

Arteta on Champions League qualification

Mikel Arteta took the pressure off his Arsenal players in the title race - and instead decided to praise them for achieving Champions League qualification.

The Gunners have secured their place in Europe's top club competition next season with five matches to go despite failing to win any of their last four Premier League matches.

He said: "Win tomorrow - that's what we have to do. Within the disappointment and the spirit around [the club], we need to do two things - recognise what a lot of people around the club have done to get us back into the Champions League, which was already a difficult thing to achieve.

"Not a lot of people were very optimistic that we had the ability to do that at the start of the season, and we need to start recognising the good work that a lot of people have done to achieve that.

"The second thing - which I like the most - is that even achieving that with six games to go - something that hasn't happened in more than a decade at this club - that we are still not satisfied, still upset and we want more.

"We want the club to be consistently with the best, that's the mentality we need and that’s what I've loved most over the last few days."

Mari joins Monza

Arsenal defender Pablo Mari has completed a permanent exit from the club after completing a switch to Serie A side Monza.

The 29-year-old made the season-long loan move to Monza at the start of the season, with a clause in the contract that it would become permanent should they stay in Italy's top division.

They managed to do just that over the weekend with a 2-0 success over Spezia guaranteeing a place in Serie A for next season. They currently sit comfortably in tenth position in the table after an impressive run of form that has seen them chalk up victories against Inter Milan and Fiorentina.

Mari is now set to make the move to Monza in a deal worth around €7 million (£5.9m) this summer. He has made 26 appearances for Monza throughout the campaign - playing every minute of each of the last eight games in Serie A.

Arteta praises Chelsea

Mikel Arteta has hailed the Chelsea squad as "exceptional" despite their damning recent form.

The Blues have failed to win any of their last eight matches in all competitions since beating Leicester 3-1 back in February. They currently sit 12th, a mammoth 24 points behind fourth-place Manchester United.

However, Arteta praised the Blues and admitted it will be a tough game. He said: "That they are going to try to come to the Emirates to beat us. They have a great manager and exceptional players, so it is very difficult to predict what they will do because they can play in various ways with different players and different qualities as well.

"We are going to prepare for the game to win it, that’s it."

"It is going to be a very different game," he added. "It is a London derby and they have something to prove, and we have something to prove. The atmosphere is going to be incredible to play in that stadium and we are going to have to be at our best again."
