Arsenal news: Mikel Arteta's role questioned as summer transfer discussions begin

Mikel Arteta's role in Arsenal's third goal against Watford has been questioned by former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher.

Bukayo Saka scored one goal and set up another as Arsenal moved into the top four with a hard-fought 3-2 win at Watford after Martin Odegaard had given the visitors an early lead.

But Arteta's role in the win has come under scrutiny after Gallagher appeared to suggest the refereeing team made a mistake.

It comes as the club has reportedly started discussions over William Saliba's future once his season-long loan at Marseille is over.

And Paul Merson's pre-season comments about Gunners midfielder Martin Odegaard look to have been rather wide of the mark.

Here are Mirror Football's latest Arsenal headlines.

Merson's comment backfires

Paul Merson's comments about Arsenal midfielder Martin Odegaard have come back to bite him following the Norwegian's latest performance.

Odegaard was at the heart of Arsenal's midfield and bagged himself an early goal after Bukayor Saka cut the ball back for him to slot home for his fifth goal of the season as Mikel Arteta's side beat Watford 3-2 on Sunday.

Former Gunners star Paul Merson previously slammed the club over signing the midfielder after he "didn’t exactly pull up any trees on loan" last season.

And it appears Merson's comments about Arsenal signing the midfielder have now well and truly backfired.

Transfer discussions begin

The Arsenal board have reportedly come to an agreement over the future of French defender William Saliba – and it could have a huge impact on the player's future.

Saliba has spent this season on loan with Ligue 1 side Marseille after struggling to break into the first team at the Emirates Stadium following his £27million move from St Ettiene in 2019.

Marseille president Pablo Longoria has said he wants to pursue a permanent deal for the Frenchman during the next transfer window.

And the club's stance on selling the defender now seems clear, following the agreement between the Arsenal board.

Arteta's role questioned

Mikel Arteta's role in Arsenal's third goal against Watford has been questioned by ex-referee Dermot Gallagher.

The goal came after Bukayo Saka took a quick throw to allow Cedric Soares to run behind the backline before the ball was then cleverly worked to Gabriel Martinelli, who curled it into the net.

But Saka was only able to take the quick throw-in after Arteta returned the ball to him after it went off the pitch.

And Gallagher has now claimed the goal only came about because of the intervention of Arteta – and the game's officials should perhaps have prevented it.
