Arsenal news: Mikel Arteta approach reaps reward as Aaron Hickey transfer explained

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta's approach towards protecting his young players has reaped rewards as the Gunners have fought their way back into the Premier League's top four.

Their bid to qualify for next season's Champions League suffered a blip last month as the Gunners registered successive defeats to Crystal Palace, Brighton and then Southampton. But following the loss to Southampton, Arteta was outspoken about who should take the blame in a bid to protect the young players in his team.

It comes as technical director Edu has explained why the Gunners want to sign Bologna full-back Aaron Hickey. And Ian Wright has already told his former club why they need to beat Chelsea to the signing of Crystal Palace youngster Michael Olise.

Here are Mirror Football's latest Arsenal headlines.

Wright explains need for Olise signing

Arsenal icon Ian Wright has already explained why his former club need to beat Chelsea to the signing of Michael Olise.

The France youth international could be on his way out of Crystal Palace this summer just a year after arriving from Reading for £8million. Reports have suggested he has a £35million release clause written into his contract at Selhurst Park, with Arsenal and Chelsea both said to be interested in exploring a move this summer.

And speaking on ITV earlier in the season, Wright explained perfectly why Arsenal need to sign the "unbelievable" playmaker football.london reports.

Hickey transfer expained

Arsenal's reported attempt to sign Bologna full-back Aaron Hickey has already been explained by technical director Edu.

Reports have suggested Mikel Arteta's side could add Hickey to their ranks this summer as the Gunners boss looks to add further depth to his defensive positions. The move would be similar to Arsenal's purchase of Nuno avares last summer, who was brought in as Kieran Tierney's understudy.

And after that signing, Edu explained the player's age was part of the strategy as it meant the player did not take up one of the non-homegrown player spots within Arsenal's 25-man Premier League squad because he was under the age of 21, football.london reports.

Arteta approach reaps reward

Mikel Arteta's comments following Arsenal's 1-0 defeat to Southampton last month look to have paid off.

With his side registering their third successive Premier League defeat to see their Champions League hopes take a wobble, Arteta insisted his side's form was "the bill that you have to pay when you have such a young squad". With his players coming in for criticism, Arteta asked pundits to "hit me" because he didn't "want them to be hit because they are not prepared to take that".

And his approach towards protecting his young players has reaped rewards as the Gunners have pulled themselves back into the Premier League's top four.
