Arsenal news: Gunners avoid Newcastle repeat as Leandro Trossard admits title regret

Here is your morning Arsenal digest on Monday, May 8.

Newcastle clash

Arsenal kept their Premier League title hopes alive with a mature 2-0 victory over Newcastle at St. James' Park. The game got off to a rocky start when Jacob Murphy hit the post inside a minute and the hosts thought they had a penalty for a handball by Jakub Kiwior before VAR intervened.

The Gunners weathered the early storm though and came back into the game before Martin Odegaard hammered them in front from the edge of the box. It could have been several more before half time, but Newcastle fought back after the break and forced Aaron Ramsdale into some sublime saves.

Arsenal again held firm under the Geordie pressure and struck a second when Fabian Schar could only turn Gabriel Martinelli's cross into his own net.

Trossard's regret

Arsenal attacker Leandro Trossard has spoken of his regret regarding the Gunners' Premier League title challenge.

When quizzed on his thought on the title race, the Belgian international told Sky Sports: "We knew [City] would come close and it’s all about us I think. Obviously, it’s not in our hands anymore but before it was just looking at ourselves.

"If we would have won all those games, it would be a different story of course. But we gave them that a little bit to come back into the race and obviously now they are ahead of us."

Edu's message to Marquinhos

Arsenal sporting director Edu has admitted his support for Marquinhos after the youngster was called up to Brazil's squad for the Under-20s World Cup.

Writing on Instagram, the Gunner transfer chief said: "We are very proud @_marquinhos011 !!! (clapping emoji)." Marquinhos joined the north London outfit last summer, signing from Sao Paulo on a four-year contract with an option for a further year for a fee believed to be in the region of £3million, football.london understands.

The 20-year-old scored and assisted on his senior debut against FC Zurich in the UEFA Europa League but found game time hard to come by before eventually joining Championship side Norwich City on loan during the January transfer window.
