Arsenal handed unique William Saliba and Bukayo Saka transfer problem with mid-season World Cup

Football faces a unique season ahead, with a winter World Cup just over one month away from kicking off. It means the schedules, especially in Europe, have had to be shuffled around once again to accommodate Qatar hosting the tournament.

What that brings with it is some very interesting scenarios, such as games being bunched up into a busy schedule or teams playing fewer matches before reaching the January window and a chance to reinvest in their playing squad. With that could come a different outcome to leagues that may have otherwise turned out in an alternative fashion in a regular campaign.

For Arsenal though, it presents a potential worry when it comes to two key players in Bukayo Saka and William Saliba. The pair have shone in the early stages of the season, becoming standouts for both club and country, with both expected to make an appearance in the competition.

While the Gunners would be proud to see their two youngsters impressing on the big stage, it could throw them a concern when it comes to their long-term futures at the club. Both players have less than two years remaining on their contracts.

While talks are said to be ongoing over a new deal for them both, any outstanding performances could leave Edu and Arteta at a new disadvantage in negotiating an extension. This could, in turn, lead to Arsenal losing two promising stars of their first team in the next few years.

For Saka, this may seem more unlikely given his attachment to the club, with both him and the manager claiming talks are progressing well and nearing an agreement. As for Saliba, there was uncertainty surrounding his role in the side, but there may be hopes that his guarantee of a start so far could keep him for longer.

It remains to be seen exactly how it may play out for both as there will be hopes that they can carry their club form into the international break. However, the double-edged sword in causing potential contract concerns could also be a factor during a unique season.
