Arsenal handed training boost ahead of Liverpool but two players absent

Arsenal could be boosted by the return of a key player when they face Liverpool on Thursday.

The Reds take on the Gunners in the second leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final.

Jurgen Klopp’s side had to settle for a goalless draw in the first leg at Anfield last week, leaving it all to play for at the Emirates on Thursday.

The winner of the tie will go through to play Chelsea in the final at Wembley Stadium at the end of next month.

Arsenal initially had concerns about being able to fulfil the fixture against Liverpool, after their Premier League clash against Tottenham Hotspur last weekend was postponed.

In the first leg, Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta was without several key players through positive Covid-19 tests, injury or being away at the Africa Cup of Nations.

However, based on the club’s latest round of training pictures, Arsenal could have one of their previous absentees returning to the squad.

Martin Odegaard, who missed the first leg at Anfield, was pictured back in training for the first time since recording a positive Covid-19 test.

Despite Odegaard returning to training, images available to our colleagues at football.london noticed two players who were missing for the Gunners.

Emile Smith Rowe and Takehiro Tomiyasu were nowhere to be seen, which could mean that they are unavailable to face Liverpool.

Neither of the duo were involved in the first leg, with both being out with respective injuries.

Even though Odegaard has returned to training, Arteta did not give anything away when asked in his press conference about specific players’ availability.

"I can’t and I don’t want to because I don’t want to give anything away, I’m sorry," he said. "There are issues and those issues haven’t been resolved that’s why we couldn’t play the last game.

"But as you can understand we want to keep that internal

"I hope there is no more news from tomorrow and the game can be played. This is the way we have prepared."

Arteta continued: "Again, there are three cases that for different reasons haven’t been able to play for us in recent weeks.

"We are trying to change and raise the level of those players to the best possible level to compete tomorrow."
