Arsenal handed chance to hijack Tottenham transfer with 'agreement' already established

Arsenal and Tottenham are set to face off in the transfer market with both clubs reportedly being offered the chance to sign Barcelona centre-back Clement Lenglet.

The Catalan side are looking to move the Frenchman on with Chelsea's Andreas Christensen set to arrive at the Camp Nou in the coming days. Reports emerged earlier this week that Antonio Conte was looking to add Lenglet to his side as he looks for a naturally left-footed centre-back to bolster his defence.

According to Catalunya Radio, Lenglet has accepted that he will not be part of Xavi's first-team plans next season and has agreed to look into a departure this summer. Barcelona are looking to loan the 26-year-old out for two-years and Tottenham were the first to be approached about the deal, with Daniel Levy apparently open to paying his substantial wages.

However, The Times, via TEAMtalk, have now reported that Arsenal have since been offered the same opportunity with Mikel Arteta now presented with a chance to hijack the deal of the Gunners' arch-rivals. The Spaniard is looking for another significant overhaul of his squad with European football returning next term.

"What we want to do is improve the team and the squad," Arteta said of his summer plans back in May. "There’s not a player that can’t improve. We want to retain our best players for sure and add quality and depth.

"We have to be prepared for when we’re going to do that [keep players] and why. We can control those timings. Sometimes it’s inevitable but we want to maintain our best players."
