Arsenal handed boost in signing Chelsea's own Kylian Mbappe but face repeating midfield issue

Arsenal have been handed a huge boost in their pursuit of Chelsea midfield star N'Golo Kante this summer as the Athletic have reported the Frenchman has turned down an initial offer of a new contract with the club. The 31-year-old's contract at Stamford Bridge expires in 2023, opening up the possibility of an exit on a free transfer next summer.

That could give the Gunners the boost they need to make a move work for Kante, who has been a stalwart for the Blues since signing for the club. Their interest in the two-time Premier League winner came from a report from the Daily Star in the summer, claiming a move was being monitored by Mikel Arteta.

It would prove an ambitious move for a key player of such a direct rival, but one that may impact them heavily. Look no further than former Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel on just how important Kante is to Chelsea, who gave a glowing review of the player during last season.
