Arsenal missed out on a number of striking candidates in January as they offloaded both Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang on a permanent deal to Barcelona and Folarin Balogun joined Middlesbrough on loan. The transfer chase for Dusan Vlahovic ended in failure and by then alternatives had either moved or were unable to be signed.
This summer, Arsenal are looking to move for their primary targets early so as to not miss out on their priority positions in need of strengthening. However, with so many forwards having left, signing just the proposed Gabriel Jesus and renewing Nketiah might not be enough.
Furthermore, both aforementioned strikers are of a similar style and Arsenal would continue to lack an aerial presence in the box. One of the potential loan options this summer is Wout Weghorst.

Arsenal were linked with a move for Weghorst back in 2020 but opted against the Dutch international. When he arrived in the Premier League in January, he quickly showed the Gunners what they missed out on.
He along with the likes of Maxwell Cornet were very nearly responsible for a great escape which ultimately faltered on the final day of the Premier League season. According to Sport Bild, Burnley are willing to allow the 29-year-old to leave on loan after their relegation was confirmed.
Although should Arsenal wish to reignite their interest in the former Wolfsburg man, they will need to move quickly with Bundesliga interest growing. Bild report that UEFA Europa League winner Eintracht Frankfurt are looking to offer a return to Germany.
If Frankfurt can offer Weghorst more regular playing time than he would surely get with Arsenal, he would almost certainly choose the switch back to a familiar league. The Dutchman could be a real asset for Mikel Arteta whose side has needed the additional mettle in the box.
Arsenal will be looking at Manchester City and Liverpool with their potential forward lines including Erling Haaland and Darwin Nunez respectively and thinking how far behind their falling. Whilst Weghorst won’t close the gap regarding quality, having that physical option will at least hand Mikel Arteta a different weapon.
