Arsenal edge past West Ham to keep Champions League hopes firmly alive - 6 talking points

Arsenal reclaimed their spot in the top four with a gutsy win over West Ham.

Tottenham's 3-1 win over Leicester City earlier on Sunday piled the pressure on Mikel Arteta's men as they leapfrogged their city rivals heading into their clash with the Hammers at the London Stadium.

But the Gunners rose to the occasion as Rob Holding and Gabriel secured a vital three points for the visitors. The former scored his first-ever Premier League goal before Jarrod Bowen provided an instant reply.

Gabriel had the last laugh however as he steered home a powerful header past Lukasz Fabianski to seal a 2-1 victory.

Here are the talking points from the entertaining Premier League clash.

Holding's milestone

Rob Holding was Arsenal's unlikely hero as he opened the scoring for the north Londoners. The centre-half diverted Bukayo Saka's cross into the bottom corner to give the visitors the lead.

It was Holding's first-ever goal in the Premier League and he was as surprised as anyone that he popped up with the vital strike as he shared a laugh with Saka during his celebration.

Craig Dawson and Tomas Soucek's absence definitely hurt West Ham on this occasion as their presence defending set-pieces was sorely missed.

Bowen bounce back

Arsenal didn't react well to going ahead as Aaron Ramsdale had to pull off a brilliant point-blank save immediately after they scored so the warning signs were there.

And Jarrod Bowen finally made the breakthrough with a brilliant left-footed strike that nestled in the bottom corner.

It was poor defending from Arsenal's point of view as they shouldn't gave a player of his quality that amount of room.

West Ham responded like they have done all season and were deservedly on level terms at the break.

Gabriel to the rescue

Arsenal had a bright start to the second half and it was another centre-back that came up clutch for the Emirates club.

Gabriel Martinelli floated a ball to the back post as West Ham failed to clear a corner and it was Gabriel who was waiting to pounce as his close-range header was too powerful to keep out.

The Gunners' issues putting the ball in the back of the net have been well documented this season with a lack of firepower at the top end of the pitch, but who needs a no.9 when not one but two defenders can chip in with goals.

Tomiyasu blow

Takehiro Tomiyasu returned to Arsenal's starting line-up against West Ham after three months on the sidelines and didn't look out of place, but he might have suffered a potential relapse of his injury.

The Japanese defender's brilliant debut season has been derailed by a calf injury he picked up at the turn of the year. Cedric Soares has been operating at right-back in his absence, but the defender returned to action last weekend during the Gunners' 3-1 win over Manchester United as he climbed off the bench for the Portuguese full-back.

Tomisayu came through it unscathed and played from the start at the London Stadium. He dealt with the Hammers' attacking threat with ease as the likes of Pablo Fornals and Said Benrahma didn't get much joy down his side throughout the majority of the game.

But the right-back seemed to have tweaked something as he was forced off with Cedric taking his place. Arsenal fans will be fearing the worst given his injury troubles this season.

Moyes' gamble doesn't pay off

Arsenal didn't know how David Moyes would set up his team as the West Ham boss made key changes ahead of the return leg of their Europa League semi-final tie against Eintracht Frankfurt.

Soucek and Michail Antonio were rested to keep them fresh for the trip to Germany as they trail the Bundesliga side 2-1 and it's clear that the hosts were weakened as a result.

Antonio's absence meant there was no focal point at the top end of the pitch so when West Ham did get in promising areas, they had nobody to target in the box which meant Arsenal were able to thwart their danger.

Advantage Arsenal in top-four race

Tottenham's win over Leicester earlier on Sunday meant Arsenal had to respond or they would drop down to fifth.

And they did exactly that as they reclaimed fourth spot over their city rivals. It's a crucial three points and the Gunners have successfully navigated a potential banana skin as West Ham have been in great form this season

It would not be a surprise to see the top-four race go right down to the wire with Arsenal just two points clear of Antonio Conte's men with four games left of the season.
