Arsenal could be close to sealing first January signing as talks for two strikers are revealed

Arsenal's main transfer priority ahead of Monday's deadline has become even clearer.

Or at least, it would appear this is the case as both Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Eddie Nketiah could become the latest first-team players to depart the Emirates Stadium this month.

According to the Telegraph, talks with Newcastle United a progressing well and it's hoped that the former will travel to the North East this weekend to complete his move.

Meanwhile, The Athletic have revealed that La Liga giants Barcelona and Serie A side Juventus have made approaches to offer Aubameyang an escape route after falling out of favour with Mikel Arteta.

Furthermore, the report states that the most likely scenario for the Gabon international is that he leaves on loan, with Arsenal subsidising a portion of his wages.

Aubameyang hasn't featured for the Gunners since the 2-1 loss against Everton at the beginning of December and was left out of the squad that travelled to Dubai this week for a warm-weather training camp.

This is all in relation to the 32-year-old being stripped of the captaincy following a ‘disciplinary breach’.

As with Nketiah, he had been expected to depart at the end of the season due to his contract expiring in June and amid Arteta's stance that the striker would not be leaving this month.

"The situation is that Eddie is our player, he’s under contract so he is going to stay here with us," the Spaniard told reporters.

Despite Arteta being adamant about Nketiah's future, latest developments could point to Arsenal sorting some incomings of their own before the January window closes.

The fact that the Gunners are in talks with Newcastle for Nketiah is made even more interesting with the fact that Aubameyang seems just as close to the exit door.

If the duo end up leaving, Arteta's senior centre-forward options would be Alexandre Lacazette and nobody else.

Having scored just once with two strikers available in January, getting through the rest of the season and staying in the top-four race with one recognised centre-forward would be an almost impossible task for the Arsenal manager.

Therefore, allowing Aubameyang and Nketiah to leave just might make the Gunners' plans between now and January transfer deadline day all the more clearer as it seems certain they will look to sign a striker.

Perhaps being in talks with Newcastle and receiving approaches from Barcelona and Juventus means the club are already closing in on the signing for their first January deal in terms of incomings.

With Dusan Vlahovic closing in on a move to Juve, Arsenal have already missed out on their top target but they have been linked with moves for the likes of Alexander Isak, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Luka Jovic and Jonathan David.

Maybe one deal is at an advanced stage?

Of the quartet, there's a strong case that a deal for Isak would be the to complete due to his €90million (£75.4million) release clause and the fact that Arsenal would be able to negotiate with Real Sociedad to drive the price down.

"My clause? We, the players, don't take too much care of that, it's more on the side of the clubs," the Sweden international revealed back in November. "We play and the clubs negotiate with each other."

What will also be music to the ears of Arsenal fans is that the Sweden international has dreams of playing in the Premier League at some point in his career.

"I am in a good place at the moment, I am very happy, but one day it would be nice to play in England as well," Isak recently told The Independent. "They have six or seven of the biggest clubs in the world, it is a very high level, and of course one day it would be an alternative. Every player wants to be the best version of themselves and reach the highest possible level.

"I have expectations for myself that I’m trying to fulfil, so we’ll see where the journey takes me in future."

Could Isak be about to fulfil his dream at Arsenal very soon?
