Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham fixtures that would be postponed for Queen's funeral

Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham are set to not only have this week's game week 7 fixtures of the 2022/23 Premier League postponed due to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II's death but also next week's game due to the state funeral.

All three London clubs have missed out on the opportunity to potentially collect points this weekend against Fulham, Everton and Man City, respectively. It was announced at around 6 PM (GMT) on Thursday, September 8, 2022, that the Queen had passed away peacefully at Balmoral Castle in Scotland after being placed under 'medical supervision' earlier on in the day.

Her death has not only sent the nation, now led by King Charles III, into a prolonged period of national mourning but has also caused havoc for football fans who have had their weekend plans ruined because of the historic news. Despite the UK Government's approval that games could be played out this weekend under certain conditions, the DCMS allowed the Premier League and other bodies to decide on what was the plan of action. Unfortunately, no football was the code of the time.

A statement from the league's official website read: "At a meeting this morning, Premier League clubs paid tribute to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. To honour her extraordinary life and contribution to the nation, and as a mark of respect, this weekend's Premier League match round will be postponed, including Monday evening's game."

Richard Masters, the Premier League's Chief Executive, said: "We and our clubs would like to pay tribute to Her Majesty's long and unwavering service to our country. As our longest-serving monarch, she has been an inspiration and leaves behind an incredible legacy following a life of dedication.

"This is a tremendously sad time for not just the nation but also for the millions of people around the world who admired her, and we join together with all those in mourning her passing."

The Premier League went onto confirm that further updates regarding fixtures during the period of mourning will be provided in due course.

football.london understands that all fixtures in game week 8 are now in jeopardy due to the Queen's state funeral set to take place on Sunday, September 18. This would require a huge Police force, meaning more cancellations could be on the way.

It hasn't been confirmed yet but the rumour going around is that all UEFA Champions League, Europa League and Conference League games next midweek are set to go ahead despite the Premier League's stance.

But with all taken into consideration, football.london has taken a look at the fixtures all Arsenal, Chelse and Spurs will miss because of the state funeral next weekend.

Tottenham vs Leicester City (Saturday, September 17- 17:30 KO)

Brentford vs Arsenal (Sunday, September 18- 14:00 KO)

Chelsea vs Liverpool (Sunday, September 18- 16:30 KO)

These potential next cancellations could cause havoc to the footballing calendar as the international break follows after game week 8. Plus, the countdown to the FIFA World Cup in Qatar has well and truly begun, so where are the governing bodies going to find the time for all these re-arranged fixtures? That is a question that they will be actively working on right now.
