Arsenal best XI after January transfer window as Mikel Arteta weighs up Jorginho headache

Don't change a winning side is what they say. Adding depth to the squad is never a bad idea though. With just the Premier League and Europa League left the equation is straightforward for Arsenal.

They have added three new bodies to their squad and seen two peripheral figures move on loan for the rest of the season too. Although the injury to Mohamed Elneny leaves them down a midfielder for now it's hard to argue that they haven't improved over the January window.

It may not have been the reinforcement that many wanted but the winter is rarely a time for major changes. Manchester City's recent title wins have come without huge additions whilst Liverpool buying Luiz Diaz last year was closer to a Leandro Trossard type signing than it was a marquee entry.

In essence, January buys are rarely the priority of a team at the top end of the table. Jorginho was an opportunistic buy that has low risk and high reward on an individual level. Trossard already looks to have slotted in whilst Jakub Kiwior can be a helpful player whilst also planning for the future.

To this extent not much may change week on week for Mikel Arteta's men. Kiwior is hardly going to be displacing William Saliba though he provides added competition for Gabriel Magalhaes. Jorginho is best suited to playing alongside someone of the Granit Xhaka or Thomas Partey mould rather than instead of them meanwhile Trossard will do well to start regularly instead of Gabriel Martinelli or Bukayo Saka.

The depth aspect is important though. When it comes to the Europa League rotation will be vital. Although it would be nice to get a trophy win in Europe it is surely more important to maintain a title charge. But for a major slip up there will be no need to win the tournament to get into the Champions League.

On this level having Kiwior, Jorginho - an excellent player in Europe - and Trossard to take some of the minutes from the league regulars may be just as important as signing out and out competitors for each spot. Such is the form of Martinelli, Saka, Partey and Co it is unlikely but not a negative at all of the new players if they struggle to make an impact.

For this reason, a strongest XI after the transfer window looks no different to the one that most would have picked before January. The work has undoubtedly strengthened the squad but with the current form it's hard to say that any of the new signings are going to be straight into the thick of it against Everton on Saturday.

Arsenal best XI after January transfer window: Ramsdale; White, Saliba, Gabriel, Zinchenko; Partey, Xhaka, Odegaard; Saka, Jesus, Martinelli.
