Array of events lined up to mark LGBT+ History Month in Perth and Kinross

Perth and Kinross Council is celebrating LGBT+ History Month with a range of events this February.

This year’s theme is “Blurring Borders,” which explores LGBT liberation and community across the globe.

Perth Bridge and St Paul’s were lit up in rainbow colours at the start of February and will be lit in purple on 25 February to mark Purple Friday, LGBT Youth Scotland’s annual fundraising event.

Rainbow Laces Day took place on February 1 to launch LGBT+ History month, and is also part of a national campaign led by Stonewall UK to promote lesbian, gay, bi and trans equality within sport.

Time to Talk Day is the nation’s biggest mental health conversation and took place on February 3, it’s the day that friends, families, communities, and workplaces come together to talk, listen and change lives.

A panel on LGBTQIA+ parenting and the Perthshire Pride AGM was held on February 9 this week.

Purple Friday is LGBT Youth Scotland’s annual fundraising event and is a day to show your support for LGBT equality and fundraise for the charities work with LGBTI young people.

This year the PKC Equalities Team are showing support by taking part in a team walk at the North Inch Perth on February 25 at 11am and welcome any friends and colleagues who would like to join.

The same day, ‘Lockdown Lounge’ is welcoming any requests for songs themed around ‘purple’ to promote Purple Friday.

A number of community events across the region will also be held.

Equalities lead for Perth and Kinross Council, Councillor Peter Barrett, said: “Every February communities in Perth and Kinross come together to celebrate LGBT+ History month in a colourful festival of inclusion.

“LGBT+ history month is about increasing the visibility of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people, promoting civil rights and raising awareness current matters affecting the community.

“I want to thank all of the groups and partners who have helped put together a great programme of events for LGBT history month in Perth and Kinross.”
