Arnold Christmas market dates and lights switch on

Later this month Gedling Borough Council will be hosting a Christmas light switch on event and Christmas market. The light switch on event will take place outside the new AMP building, the centrepiece of the Arnold Market redevelopment, on Friday, November 18, from 4.30pm.

The event will include performances from local schools, including Richard Bonington Primary School, Redhill Academy, Arnold View Primary and Pinewood Infant School as well as the local choirs, Nottingham Boys Choir and the Invisible Friends. The lights will then be switched on by the Mayor of Gedling, Councillor Peter Barnes, at 6pm.

Next to the event an indoor craft fair will be taking place at Arnold Methodist Church, with stalls selling items such as cards, festive food and gifts. There will also be a special visit from Santa at the event.

Christmas markets will also be taking place outside The AMP during the run up to Christmas. Markets will be open on November 26, December 3, 10 and 17.

The markets are being organised by Rural Retailer and will be open from 10am until 2pm. Leader of Gedling Borough Council, Councillor John Clarke, said: "It’s always a pleasure to be able to announce details of these events which we know are welcomed and supported by so many of our residents and local business.

"It’s a perfect opportunity for people to start getting into the Christmas spirit and bring the community together to celebrate. This year, we have a new venue for the event right outside the recently completed AMP building in a dedicated community event space. This will be the first of many events for the new space and I look forward to joining our residents on what is always a fantastic night.”

The AMP, where a number of independent businesses are set to open, opened in October. Sutton-in-Ashfield is also preparing for Christmas, with decorations put up in Portland Square and Low Street. These two streets will see a mass of Christmas Lights, a huge tree and a surprise 3D installation.

Ashfield District Council will be switching on its Christmas lights on Thursday, November 17, at the Sutton Market Place car park. The event will last from 4.30pm until 7.30pm with fun fair rides, live entertainment, and a Christmas market with over 40 stalls.

independent Councillor David Hennigan, who represents Sutton Central and New Cross, said: “Everyone knows that Christmas comes early in Sutton. It was great to meet the team who will be decorating our Town Centre.

"As a council, we’ve always prided ourselves on putting on a great show for Christmas. Evidence shows that a great Christmas Lights display and amazing tree attracts shoppers and brings people into our Town Centre.

"We’ve started really early this year. We hope our brilliant displays and yuletide atmosphere will bring more and more people to use our shops and enjoy our award winning indoor market as we gear up for our best and longest Christmas ever.” Elsewhere across the county, 90s band East 17 have been booked to turn on Mansfield's Christmas lights. While in Nottingham city centre, there will be no official lights switch on ceremony and the lights will be turned on when the Winter Wonderland opens on November 15.
