Arne Slot profiled as Dutchman linked with Leeds United job following Jesse Marsch exit

Since former Leeds United manager Jesse Marsch was sacked on Monday afternoon, there have been plenty of names already associated with the job.

West Brom manager Carlos Corberan remains the bookies' favourite but Marsch's predecessor Marcelo Bielsa, as well as big names like Mauricio Pochettino and Ralph Hasenhuttl, have been reported to be of interest to the Whites.

However, one name whose links have just surfaced appears to be Dutch manager Arne Slot. The 44-year-old has only been managing professionally for three years but in that time has made waves in the Eredivisie and could be set on a move to the Premier League.

Here's an introduction into the latest candidate to be named in the race of the vacant Leeds United job.

Who is he?

Arne Slot first began his playing career with FC Zwolle in 1995 as a midfielder before moving to multiple different Dutch teams including NAC Breda, Sparta Rotterdam and PEC Zwolle.

After retiring at the age of 35, Slot began his managerial career as a youth coach with PEC Zwolle in 2013, before being appointed as the assistant manager to then-manager of SC Cambuur Henk de Jong a year later.

Slot held that position for three years before finding himself a move to AZ Alkmaar as John van den Brom's assistant manager before replacing Van Den Brom after he was sacked.

He spent two years as manager at AZ, and was in charge for 58 matches, winning 32 of them, drawing 16 and losing only 10 with a +66 goal difference, leaving the role with a win percentage of over 55%.

In December 2020, Feyenoord announced they'd agreed a deal with Slot to become the club's new manager at the start of the 2021/22 season, a position which saw him sign for an initial two years.

In his first full season at the club, he guided them to the Europa Conference League final where they lost to Jose Mourinho's Roma all the way from the qualifying stage.

His record so far at Feyenoord has seen him manage them in 80 matches, winning 48 of them, drawing 19 and losing 13 for a win percentage of exactly 60% with his club currently top of the table in the Eredivisie as they look to win their first Dutch top-flight title since 2017.

What has been said about him and the Leeds United job?

Links were first made by Dutch journalist Martijn Krabbendam who covers Slot's club Feyenoord for Voetbal International. Speaking on the Dick Voormekaar Podcast, he said that Slot's name was on a list of candidates made by the Leeds United higher-ups as they try to find a replacement.

"It certainly could [happen]. He seems to be on a list there and it is of course a nice and big club. He would certainly fit in.

"First they had Marcelo Bielsa and then some American [Marsch]. Finally in the Premier League, what would happen then?"
