US Army chief of staff Gen Randy George was pushed to shut down an investigation into an unauthorised helicopter flyby at musician Kid Rock's Tennessee home days before Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth forced him into retirement, the Washington Post has reported.

Three people familiar with the matter told the newspaper that Gen Christopher LaNeve, then the Army's vice chief of staff, informed George that Hegseth did not want the investigation to proceed. George, who believed the Army should follow normal procedures and complete the review, is said to have been troubled by the encounter.
