Armed police in tense stand-off as axe man locks himself in Leeds house

Armed police were involved in a tense stand-off with a man armed with an axe during a domestic incident in Leeds last night (Friday, January 6).

A large area of Sissons Street in Middleton, was cordoned off while officers tried to calm the man down and bring the incident to a safe conclusion. The stand-off lasted for over an hour and a half as specially trained negotiators spoke to the man.

A spokeswoman for West Yorkshire Police said: "At 11.15pm last night, police were called to a domestic incident in Sissons Street, Middleton, Leeds, where a man was refusing to leave a property and was in possession of an axe.

"Armed officers were deployed to the scene along with police negotiators to bring the incident to a safe conclusion. At 12.50am, the man was detained and arrested on suspicion of domestic assaults, possession of an offensive weapon, and criminal damage.

"He had minor injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment before being later discharged."
